Tips to Encourage Your Child to Become Interested in Science

Science is a subject that not all students appreciate, but once they do, it becomes a fascinating learning experience. That is why it is important that you help your child enjoy science and view it as a fun experience instead of just a school subject. The following tips and information can help you promote a more enjoyable science environment at home.

Encourage Your Child to Be Excited About Science

Asking questions, investigating, and learning new things is the base of all science subjects. Science needs to be experienced as something interactive and not as something that is only in a textbook. Carrying out fun experiments and pointing out the science behind daily activities, such as cooking, can help them experience science in a more enjoyable way. Encourage your child to get excited about science through movies, experiments, family field trips, and other hands-on experiences.

Provide Them with Additional Science Help Before They Get Behind

Helping your child do better in science starts with helping them enjoy it, but it is also important that as they advance they learn more complex concepts. Teach Your Child to Love Science by Taking Advantage of Their Curiosity

All children can learn to love science if exposed to it correctly. In fact, small children are naturally attracted to science because science is basically our way of making sense of the world. Curiosity is what drives our knowledge of science and enables us to ask questions, create investigations, seek answers, and obtain information that helps us reach conclusions and solutions. Since small children are naturally curious, it is during those early stages that you can best start to spark their interest in science.

How to Use Your Child's Curiosity to Encourage Science Learning

  • Make every question count. Younger children tend to ask a lot of questions. In fact, children ask between 200-400 questions a day. That is a lot of questions and a great deal of opportunities to show your child how to channel their curiosity towards productive learning.
  • Address their questions. Children ask questions about everything and sometimes our quick answers don't satisfy them. It is important to never shut down their questions, and instead show them how to find answers. Point them to resources, and walk them through the process of making their own observations.
  • Example. For example, when your child asks why the grass is green, it is the perfect time to talk about chlorophyll. Point them to the jeans that got grass stains when they were playing in the park and explain that it is the chlorophyll that stained them and that plants have chlorophyll which gives them that color. Help them gather leaves and look at them closely to get them interested in finding out more. Read books about it and make sure that you always acknowledge their questions.
  • Simplify and demonstrate. You don´t necessarily have to use very many scientific terms or long explanations. Instead of just giving answers, demonstrate and encourage your child to find their own conclusions by observing, experimenting, and investigating.
  • You don't need to have all the answers. Show your child that it's ok not to know something, but that it is important to make the effort to find out. Explain that there are many resources they can take advantage of and be sure to visit your local library often.
  • Teach them to learn on their own. When they ask something that you don't know or that you can't explain very clearly, let them know that you aren't sure but that you will help them find out. Then, make the time to set out for answers together. Once you demonstrate how they can research and look for the answers, it will be easier for them to practice and do it on their own.
